교회음악과에서 클래식음악을 전공한 그는 버클리음악대학(Berklee College of Music)과 뉴욕 롱아일랜드에 있는 Five Towns College에서 학사/석사 과정으로 재즈를 전공했다. 2011년 귀국하여 인천재능대학교, 동서울대학교, 한일장신대학교 실용음악과에 출강한다. 더불어 음악작업과 활동을 병행하기 시작하고 2013년에 재즈퓨전밴드 ‘Make it’을 결성하고 앨범을 발매하여 본격적인 연주활동을 시작한다. 같은 해인 2013년에 찬송가를 재즈로 편곡하여서 교재 ‘재즈로 연주하는 찬송가’를 출간하고 음원도 출시한다.

주로 재즈클럽에서 연주경력을 쌓아가다가 2016년 5월 개인앨범 shimmering in the moonlight을 발매하고 2회에 걸친 showcase를 필두로 재즈클럽에서의 연주뿐 아니라 자라섬재즈페스티벌, 탈북청소년을 위한 콘서트, 장애우를 위한 희망방송이 주최하는 백혈병환우를 위한 기금마련 콘서트, 요양원에서의 힐링콘서트 등 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

Yup Kim, Jazz musician from Seoul, Korea, majored in classics and church music. Then, he studied Jazz Music at Berklee College of Music (B.A.) and Five Towns College(M.A.). He has lectured at Incheon Jaeneung College, Dong(eastern) Seoul College, and Hanil Jangshin College, teaching Applied Music since 2011. He performed as a pianist in ‘Make It”, his own fusion Jazz Band in 2013, which is his professional start as a Jazz musician and pianist with this band’s album. Yup Kim also published ‘Hymns Arranged for Jazz Piano” and its track in the same year.

Yup Kim has actively performed since May 2016, when he released “Shimmering in the Moonlight”, his first piano solo album. He has had two showcases for his solo album and participated in “Jarasum International Jazz Festival”. Yup Kim has tried to put his all talents and efforts as a pianist while volunteering at “Concert for North Korea Refugee Teenagers,” “Fundraising Concert for a Girl suffering from leukemia” sponsored by Hope Broadcasting , and “Healing Concert” at nursing. All these talents for piano and humanitarian efforts make him an exceptional human being.

2016년 5월 19일 발매된 김엽의 첫 앨범 "Shimmering in the moonlight" 은 일상과 자연 속에서 보고 느낀 것들을 표현한 자작곡들로 구성되어 있다. 앨범의 장르를 재즈로 국한시키지 않고 Jazz, Fusion, Contemporary 그리고 New Age 까지 피아노를 중심으로 다양한 장르의 음악들로 표현하였다. 경쟁과 삶에 지쳐있는 당신에게 그의 앨범은 따듯함과 평온함 그리고 아름다운 자연을 느끼게 해줄 것이다. 뿐만아니라 팀활동 및 다양한 앨범참여로 활동 중이며 2013년에는 "재즈로 연주하는 찬송가"라는 음원 및 교재를 작품으로 내놓기도 하였다.
